A 356 With Alternator/Monte Carlo Rally

This is an email I received from Pierre of:    BAB Trading Garage,

             ZA Lantegyia

I have made a few comments.  (jal)

Hi,

At first it was decided to reshape the old (generator) stand, but then I elected to design a new aluminum casting to fit the alternator. We are now making 5 more (castings), because other customers want this modification for their 356.

Most of the work involves the alternator.  This is a Bosch unit from the VW, and needs to be machined.  It is necessary to cut the axel (shaft) 13.5mm, machine the diameter, cut the body (13.5mm), position the internal regulator to the opposite side.  A little grinding is necessary for this operation.  Lastly, machine the end to be able to fit into the blower assembly.

It is possible to keep the original regulator, by pass it, or remove it.

This 356 is being prepared for the historic Monte Carlo Rally.

Then from the 356talk, a question, “was it okay to drive his 356 in the rain?”

Here this owner is going for it all, the Monte Carlo Rally.  WOW!!!

Also from the UK, a 356 was being prepared for the Dakar/Sydney event.    jal

The driver was not able to see very well during night driving, because of the limitations of the 6 volts system. It was decided to change to 12 volts with an alternator. It was felt that the 12 volt dc dynamo (generator) was not powerful enough with 2 high beams, extra driving lights, copilot’s instruments, and wipers.

With the alternator, the red generator’s warning light is never on.

I am waiting now for a quotation to fabricate several more alternator stands. Of course the price will be lower if I order a minimum.  For the moment I am not able to determine how many other people would be interested in this conversion.

My customer took his car from my shop last Saturday.  This is the 356 prepared for the Monte Carlo Rally.  Now I am modifying another alternator, and will take more photos to show the job.

 Best regards, Pierre, pierremodas@aol.com
