President’s Message – Skeet Gifford

President’s Message

 Skeet Gifford

By the time you read this, the Porsche and I (ably assisted by long-time friend Frank McGee) will be enroute to Lancaster, PA for the East Coast Holiday. We're planning to spend a full day at the USAF Museum in Dayton, and also pay our respects at the United 93 Memorial at Shanksville. You can look forward to a full report next month.

Preparation for driving a 51 year-old car on a trip of over 4,000 miles is daunting, if not to Carol and King, at least to me. Included in the planning:

·            A thorough safety inspection and tune-up. Not that long ago, I would have done this myself, but I'm now obliged to farm it out to CarQuip.

·            My tool kit is compact and comprehensive. I'm prepared to perform anything short of an engine overhaul.

·            My parts kit is equally comprehensive. An article in the May/June 2008 356 Registry had an excellent summary of what should be included in your parts kit. I don't necessarily agree with all the items, and am surprised that an axel boot was not included, but it's a good place to start.

·            Have Stoddard's number, 1-800-342-1414, on Speed Dial. Overnight FedEx works great.

·            Don't forget to have a copy of the Registry's Travel Assistance Network.

·            Review your insurance coverage. More is better.

·            If your route takes you through large metropolitan areas, avoid rush hour. In 2004, St. Louis was bad enough in late morning traffic.

·            Navigation is going high-tech on this trip--my cell phone talks to a Garmin nüvi 760 via Bluetooth and I listen to the caller on FM radio.

The September, 2008 issue of Hemming's Classic Car (p 104) had several recommendation for security while driving to an event. The author had several methods for disabling the engine (our fuel shut-off should do the job). He also suggested covering the car when parked overnight or (and I hadn't thought of this) asking the motel manager for permission to park at the entrance.
